Expanding Horizons in the Natural World

Children have a full day of Forest School once per term. Led by a qualified practitioner in our dedicated outdoor site, Forest School is a key learning experience that involves cultivating new skills, exploring nature and taking risks in a safe environment. Exposure to nature fosters a sense of responsibility for the environment. Learners become stewards of the natural world as they learn about conservation, sustainability and the importance of caring for the planet. In Forest School, we have three rules: Look after yourself; look after each other; and look after nature.

Benefits of Forest School

  • Engaging in sensory experiences helps learners to develop strong language and communication skills.
  • Exposure to nature and being outdoors is important for supporting learners’ mental health and wellbeing.
  • By promoting risk-taking in a safe, risk-assessed setting, activities in Forest School promote confidence and healthy risk-taking, allowing learners to overcome challenges and achieve success later in life.
  • Given time and space, children become independent, and develop and demonstrate confidence in their own abilities.
  • Children develop a keenness to participate and the ability to concentrate over long periods, building perseverance.
  • Children develop an interest in their natural surroundings, fostering knowledge and understanding as well as respect and responsibility for themselves and the environment.
  • Team activities (e.g., sharing tools, participating in play) develop social skills by increasing children’s awareness of the consequences of their actions.
  • Physical activities improve stamina along with gross and fine motor skills.

Forest School Curriculum

Forest School sessions are a mixture of adult- and child-led activities. Adult-led activities, such as fire lighting, den building, tool use and cooking, are designed to develop key skills, while child-led activities follow learners’ unique interests and are supported by adults where relevant.

Children are introduced to age-appropriate tools (e.g., peelers, drills, knives, saws) that can be used for whittling, woodcraft, and shelter building. By using these tools responsibly, they develop their fine motor skills, problem-solving abilities, and spatial awareness, and learn the importance of safety, patience and risk management.

Our site provides a safe yet challenging space for children to develop their physical abilities. There are many opportunities for ‘risky’ play, such as tree-climbing, balancing on logs and navigating natural obstacles. Activities like these promote physical strength, gross motor skills, resilience and coordination while also encouraging children to assess risk and make decisions independently.

Fires and cooking are key parts of the Forest School experience. Children learn practical skills like fire building and cooking, which promote teamwork, creativity, and an understanding of food preparation.
