Earth Day Celebrations

On 22nd April the whole school joined people around the world to celebrate Earth Day.  Special assemblies held by Mrs Bleakley in the Prep School and Miss Young in the Pre-Prep introduced the thinking behind this year’s theme of ‘Restore our Earth’ and how this links with the charity we are supporting, Just One Tree, which will plant a tree for every pound that is donated.  Supporting the charity was the idea of Rachel in Year 6, a member of the Green Team, who have been busy planting trees themselves recently.

The children were encouraged to reflect and celebrate earth by spotting something that they had never noticed before  – and then each class were challenged to come up with ten ways that they could help restore our earth.

In the Pre-Prep the children were eager to learn about Earth Day and 2B were so inspired by Miss Young’s assembly and the idea that it takes years for things to decompose that they decided to organize their rubbish into items that could be reused or recycled.  Some children decided that they would swap their crisps for fruit in the future.  The Nursery was full of budding marine conservationists as they learnt about pollution in the ocean, and came up with ideas for how this could be tackled.

We were delighted to see so many children wearing green and we have raised over £500, which translates into over 500 new trees being planted!
