Year 8 Pupils Win Prestigious Science Challenge

Salters FestivalOn Thursday 13th June a team of four Year 8 pupils joined schools from across London and the South East to participate in the Salter’s Festival of Chemistry competition held at South Bank University.   This annual event involves two practical chemistry challenges, one set by Salter’s and one by the University.

This year’s challenges involved a forensic science activity in the morning and an experiment investigating reaction rates in the afternoon.  In addition to looking for good practical techniques, correct sets of results and well thought out written conclusions the judges were also looking for an awareness of health and safety and teamwork.  The Hilden Grange team beat fifteen other schools to win the university challenge.

Mrs Beal, Head of Science commented, "The pupils had a fantastic day and really enjoyed the experience of working in a university laboratory environment.  I was very impressed and the judges clearly were too.  They did extremely well to win the university challenge and I was delighted to see their hard work pay off."
