'The Art of Science'
Art and Science were brought together during this year’s Science Week with some fascinating talks and demonstrations, and a huge array of hands-on activities.
‘Sam, Sam the Bubble Man’ kept Years 1, 2 and 3 thoroughly entertained with his bubble show. Fascinating facts about bubbles were accompanied by some impressive demonstrations, including putting children inside a giant bubble. Inspired by the show, the children went on to create bubble paintings.
Year 4 investigated soluble inks and chromatography to make flowers
Year 5 made marbled paper from glue and milk.
Year 7 investigated firewriting.
Year 8 made their own oil paints from and used them to paint pictures of cells on canvas.
Year 6 took part in an ‘Art of Science’ workshop with Dr Jasmine from Pro Education. She showed the children how wonderful, individual artwork can be produced through scientific experiments and phenomena. Under her guidance, they created centripetal pictures, images using marbling techniques, built 3D bubble structures and investigated mirror illusions.
The week culminated in an ‘Art of Science’ show. The children were captivated by some amazing demonstrations to reveal the beauty in science through art.
The Pre-Prep children also took part in a host of activities throughout the week. Nursery and Reception explored friction with their Spider Sliders and wind and water power with their hand-held windmills and plastic bottle fountain. The children also created Blow Painting Monsters and Floating Flowers.
Year 1 investigated Chromatography using ink and filter paper, as well as how plants absorb nutrients with flowers and food colouring. They had great fun making blow pipes to suspend Malteasers in mid-air. Year 2 made yachts to find out about wind power and magnetic butterflies to delve into the laws of Physics. They were able to unleash their creative instincts with the swirling snakes which explored the mature of hot air rising and the effects of gravity. Probably the most popular activity was the exploding monster bottles which looked at what happened when they combined bicarbonate of soda with vinegar!
