Bringing History to Life
Armada Day
The Lent Term was a hectic one for the History Department with trips and activities.
Years 3 and 4 enjoyed the Horrible History plays at the Assembly Halls in Tunbridge Wells. Year 3 were spellbound by the Awful Egyptians. Year 4 were entertained by the Rotten Romans and loved finding out about all the incredible gory facts that make history so interesting.
Year 5 pupils' knowledge of Tudor times was enhanced by a very enjoyable Armada Day at Penshurst Place where they met a host of characters, including a barber surgeon, soldier, maid, musician and a General of the Militia. They took part in lots of 'hands-on' and interactive activities.
Year 4's fantastic Roman Day involved an array of activities, including a Roman wedding ceremony, makeover, feast and games. In a session about the Roman Army they tried on armour, handled weapons and were trained to march just like a Roman soldier!

Pupils from Years 7 and 8 found their trip to the World War One battlefields of Ypres to be a thought-provoking and humbling experience. They visited the two largest British war cemeteries in the world, the museum in Ypres to examine artefacts, a German cemetery and a mock-up of a trench system. The enthusiastic and informative tour guide provided expert knowledge and enabled the children to empathise about life as a soldier during the war. In the evening the group visited the Menin Gate and listened to the Last Post - a poignant moment.
